The best place to start is at your local Registry of Contractors. They have the knowledge and resources to make it an easy process for you.

If you've worked as a plumber's assistant you already know quite a bit about needed skills and tools. Probably you need to learn about the law and liability as well as self employment accounting and taxes. Make friends with a self employed plumber for some great help.

Be prepared to have a large enough vehicle for all of your supplies. You want to make sure you are prepared at all hours, plumbing emergencies ocur all throughout the day.

Your best bet might be to hire on with an established plumber. You can see all sides of the business that way. It might be quite an education.

Start with a detailed business plan. 92% of filed businesses have no written business plan. Find out what is required with regard to licensing and permits and make sure you have the background and experience to secure those permits. Consider insurance, marketing and advertisting, admin, taxes, employees, location, business cards, etc.

You will need to be licensed as a plumber in your state. You will need insurance for your business, in case a job goes wrong and you get sued. You'll want to be incorporated, to protect your personal assets in case of lawsuit.
