Pre Labor contractions called Braxton-Hicks or false labor can feel like a back ache, menstrual cramping, or a hardening of the uterus. If they are regular and becoming more intense be sure to call your doctor. They will probably have you come to the hospital when they are about five minutes apart.

These are called Braxton Hicks contractions and are the uterus preparing for labor. They are generally based lower down than real labor contractions (real labor ones start at the top of the uterus). The timing tends to be more irregular and they generally are not painful.

Contractions are supposed to position the baby for the trip through the birth canal. Before the mother's water breaks, any contractions would potentially signify a condition of false-labor, or what are called Braxton-Hicks contractions.

I can tell you that they are sharp and they are very uncomfortable to say the least. They for me were not so much painful as they were annoying and troublesome.
