A thyroid goiter (enlargement) usually develops due to too much or not enough thyroid hormone. A physician must be consulted to verify no more serious problem exists, such as tumors.

Thyroid goiter is unusual enlargement of the thyroid gland. Though cancer of the thyroid is seen in less than five percent of patients who have goiters, bothersome symptoms such as difficulty breathing and swallowing can be present. Both pose some risk as well as discomfort. A goiter may give a person a bug-eyed appearance as it enlarges. Seek medical assistance.

Goiter is when the thyroid gland (in the throat area) becomes enlarged. Goiters can range is size from barely noticeable to very large. The most common cause is a lack of dietary iodine. Table salt is "iodized" which makes the number of cases of goiter in the U. S. minimal.

This is a condition where the thyroid gland grows larger than normal. It's usually caused by having too little or no iodine in your diet. It can be treated by introducing more iodine into your diet, ethanol injections or in some cases even surgery. It is advisable to consult a doctor immediately if you suspect that may have this condition.
