You can replace the grass with colored rock. Depending on the type of rock, the cost can be fairly inexpensive. It also helps to conserve water, and requires minumal maintenance

Depending on the area you live in, xeroscaping, replacing plants with rock, gravel, cactus, and things that don't need water may work. You could replace your grass with a drought-resistant type, like burmudagrass. Mulch, shrubs, wood deck, pavers, ivy, juniper, and clover are worth considering.

Grass can be replaced by block or slab paving, the upkeep of this is minimal. Just occasionally sweep and washdown with water to keep it looking new. Some surface weeds may appear but an occasional dose of weedkiller will keep it weed free.

I think you have several options. You could use rock or gravel. I have seen this at a house in our neighborhood. It actually looks really good. Has a sort of southwest look to it!
