Your employer is not allowed to prevent you from getting employment. If they are giving false negative reviews of your performance, you can sue them for preventing your employment and slander. If they are stating the reasons you were fired, they can be sued for giving out personal information. If possible, do not list them as a review.

You employer can not force you to stay with them. If they are trying to by blackballing you, then you can call the labor board on them.

There are ways around your employer knowing you are trying to get a new job. You can wait until your new job is secure and then give notice even though you may want this former employer for a reference. It is best to get another source for your references. Longevity at any job speaks volumes.

If your employer has got any bond signed by you, you can't try for a new job, otherwise simply give him in writing about quitting through some lawyer.
