When you apply for a job, you provide information (employers/references/addresses). You sign to indicate permission to check/verify those things. If you know for a fact that the calls were made without your permission, you must prove how you were harmed in order to file a lawsuit. Other, file a complaint with the headquarters of the business.

You may have an action for invasion of privacy, especially if you can prove real harm (e.g. you were fired from your current job). The least you can expect is a letter of apology from the company. See an attorney for the best advice.

It will probably depend on in which state you are a resident. You may have a case for invasion of privacy. Most companies have you sign for a background check.

Not much you can do. Anyone can do a background check on you at any time without your permission, legally. You can do a background check on anyone you want legally. Public information is public information, out there for anyone to find.

There is no crime if a potential employer did a back ground check of an applicant. A current employer can also do a back ground check if it is necessary for a promotion, job change, or increase in responsibilities.

If a company has done a background check on you without your permission, you have strong grounds to file a lawsuit against them. Doing a background check like this is considered an invasion of privacy.
