There is one of two reasons why you cannot remove the key. 1) The key is damaged and was forced in. 2)The more realistic reason is The wheel is probably locked. Does the steering wheel not move right to left? If so, move the wheel slighty in either direction and then remove the key.

You could have the ignition removed. But most likely you do not need to worry about it and just get a copy made to unlock the doors. You can do this by the serial number if you contact your service dealer for Pontiac. Leaving the key in there will not hurt a thing.

Unfortunately, this situation may require you to replace the ignition switch, if that's where it's stuck, or the door lock, if that's the case. If it's the ignition, try turning the wheel a little and see if the ignition releases. If it's the door, the key may break if you try too hard.

You can remove the ignition and it will allow the key to be free from its locked position. Sometimes the wheel locks and wont let you remove it.

You are going to need to make sure the car is completely in park. If you take the shifter and move it back and forth through all of the gears you should be able to get the key out.

If the key is located in the ignition slot, simply turn the wheel to the left or right while pulling on the key in the off position. This should easily dislodge the key. If it is stuck in a door then gently remove it and wiggle it a bit to get the key free.
