Most steering wheel lock problems are the cause of either poor electrical work or a wreck in which your Column locked itself. You can reset your electrical board or remove the fuse governing your steering lock.

Unless you are a very knowledgeable mechanic working on the Touareg yourself will be rather difficult. You must find the location of the problem and identify the parts involved with the problem and then replace them. Does your problem make a noise? If so locate it listening. Ask a friend or neighbor who knows about cars to take a look

You need to unbolt the inside steerwheel cover so you can check the lock itself to if the locking mechanism is sticking.

Insert the car key and turn it to where the accessories are on. Then put your foot on the break and turn the wheel slightly in the direction it is already in. Then turn the key to the on position and it should unlock.

The problem is because of a rusted out connector under your floor mat. What usually happens is that moisture leaks from your mats and shorts out the connectors.

I would recomend checking the Battery and resetting the Powertrain controle module. If the battery voltage has reached an abnormally low level the vehicle will go into securety mode. the steering, wheels, and shifter will lock. Make sure u know why your battery failed.
