An older dog that defecates in the house usually suffers from incontinence. In most cases, the cause has something to do with the dog's inability to control his muscles. A vet can usually porescribe some drugs that can be helpful.

1. Identify why the dog poops in the house. Is it a change in health, or a cry for attention? Deal with the underlying cause. 2. Take your dog outside often. Praise him heavily for pooping in good places. 3. Keep your dog near you and out of trouble.

First, take your dog to a vet to diagnose any underlying problems. At home, you can take him outside for bathroom breaks more often, clean up messes as soon as they occur, and remember that he doesn't like soiling in the house any more than you do.

It can be really hard to train/re-train an older dog to potty outside. A good way for a stubborn dog(or with bladder control issues), is to have newspaper by the door every night. If all else fails there are always diapers (even doggy diapers).
