What can I do about discrimination because of physical appearance, specifically hair?

It depends. Employers are allowed to pick and choose based on appearance. There are no laws that level the playing field with regard to height or eyeglasses or hair.

You can try negotiating with your boss about how your hair style may be important to you. If this does not work, then I suggest that you try to come to a compromise, by changing your hairstyle, perhaps?

You can have the color changed and try a new hair style. You can also try wigs and see if you like them.

If you're applying to a legal firm and you have a pink mohawk, don't expect to get hired. It's not discrimination, either. A company has a right to want to present a certain image to their clients and to the public. Remember: not everything is discrimination. You just might not be the right fit with that company.
