The urethra carries urine from the bladder and out of the body. Various bacteria can enter through the urethra and cause a bladder infection. Left untreated, this could cause damage to the urethra in the way of scarring. Sexual intercourse is another way that bacteria is sometimes forced into the urethra, which can cause infection and scarring.

Urethra damage can be caused by a variety of things. However, kidney stones are the most common source of damage. This may occur not when the kidney stone is being passed, but if it becomes lodged in the process. Various other blockages and/or tumors may also be responsible for damage.
