Most likely you are sleeping on the arm or shoulder in such away to restrict blood flow to the are or pinch off a nerve leading to that arm.

People can feel arm numbness when they are sleeping because of the inadequate blood flow they can have to their arms because they haven't been moving them.

The numbness in the arm when in sleep could be due to the reason that the flow of blood goes down in the veins of the arm.
