A person can feel hip and buttock pain simply if they have been sitting or lying in the same position for a long amount of time. Sitting or lying in the same position for more than a three or four hours at a time (without repositioning) can cause muscle aches in the butt and hips that could be very painful.

If you have a sharp type pain in your buttock and hip or even down your leg also, this could bre caused by a pinched psyatic nerve. Sometimes it takes a very long time before it gets better. Physical therapy can help.
