Mucus buildup around a dog's eye can be caused by foreign matter under the dog's outer eyelid. Sometimes this can be removed by very gently massaging under the lower eyelid to push whatever it is out. Look for eye injuries. Don't be afraid to consult a Veterinarian.

Wash the dog's eye several times a day with saline solution. This can be purchased at any drug store and is called eye wash. You can also try putting lubricating eye drops in his eye. If this doesn't clear it up, see your vet for antibiotic drops.

A similar thing happened to my dog. I took her to the vet and they gave her special medicated eye drops to heal the infection.

Your dog's diet has a lot to do with the eye boogers. Try a better food without corn and gluten. That should help.
