The magazine considers retention rates, graduation rates, costs, strength of the faculty, the scope of academic offerings and degree programs, sports and extra-curricular activities, and other factors. The input of high school academic counselors is also considered. Each factor is weighed according to the system created by USNWR in order to rank the schools.

The rankings are based on several qualities and characteristics of the particular university, such as: Food, Student Life, Academics, the Quality of the Dorms, and Professors.

U.S. News and World Report college rankings are based on acceptance rate, SAT/ACT scores, graduate success rate, and the value of the degree that a student can earn from any given university.
