The pill, Depo Provera injection both work by adjusting your hormones, IUD's are inserted into your cervix and make the wall unsuitable for an egg to attach to, condoms and diaphragms act as barriers. However you need to talk to your doctor to really decide what is right for you.

There is the traditional birthcontrol pill that comes in many different forms depending on your weight, age, and hormones. The pill is taken once daily. There is also the Depo-Prevera shot which administered one every three months. There is the diaphragm that is inserted vaginally, and spermicide liquid that can be inserted into the vagina.

Contraception can be a barrier method (condoms, diaphragms, and foams - that get between sperm and egg) or hormonal methods that prevent ovulation (pill, implants). Barrier methods are used only when you have sex, but if you forget, pregnancy can result. Hormonal methods are always active, but may affect your health and (pill) require you to remember it every day.

You can group them in three categories: Hormonal, barrier, and physical/surgical. Hormones would include the pill or Mirena IUD. Barriers include condoms, and are good for preventing STDs as well as pregnancy. Physical/surgical include vasectomy and tubal ligation as far as surgery, then NFP, the rhythm method, and "pulling out."
