Being a German, I don't think there are any definite traditions. What's common though is to celebrate "Kaffeetrinken" on a birthday, so a meal in the early afternoon with coffee and cake served for friends and relatives. People also clink glasses with sparkling wine on a birthday. Nice you care!

In germany, one of the birthday person's family memebers light the birthday candles on the birthday cake,the birthday candles are left burning the whole day.The birthday person makes a wish and tries to blow off the candles at once, if all the candles blow out once, they believe the wish of the birthday person's will come true.
