It depends on what kind of seed you buy, all have there own directions. Most of the time you just toss the seed on the ground where you have the patches and water well. If you have alot of dead grass still in place, it might be helpful to pull it up before you lay down fresh seed.

You will need to till the land first with a tiller so that you can place the seed down properly. Once you place the seed you will need to water it everyday for at least the first month. Over time the new seed will grow and you will have no more bare spots.

First mow your lawn as low as you can cut it and then powerrake it to remove thatch and debris. Afterwards, sprinkle the seeds in the bare spots in your lawn, cover it with some material to keep the seed in place, such as straw, then water it to keep the soil moist

You need to get a rake and rake the bare patches. Then sprinkle grass seed on the patches. Next, put some topsoil on top of the seeds. Lastly, water gently.
