It depends on the area you live in you should contact you local building codes offical to see what codes apply to your home. In some areas you are not allowed to have more then three layers of shingles, some areas have local codes or covanants that stipulate what materials you may use.

Roofing materials need to adhere to relevant building codes. It is imperative that you check what the local codes are in your area as you do not want to outlay for expensive material when it is not suitable. For instance it may have to be fire proof.
