Credit, credit reporting and debt collection are managed by federal law. Some states have secondary laws regarding things garnishments and phone calls, but for the most part the law is the same from state to state. You can check online for specifics regarding North Carolina as they pertain to your specific situation.

These are all federal laws. Credit card laws and credit card debit are covered by federal mandates. Even the federal government is behind the fair debt collection act and the credit practices legislation. Credit cards and debt collection of same are covered by federal, not state law. A few states have enacted addemdum laws but the rules regarding finance charges, fees and penalties are regulared by federal law. A number of agencies issue regulations. The Concumer Protection Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act are examples of protections.
