Guitar strings are numbered from the thinnest, highest pitched (number 1) to the thickest, lowest pitched (number 6). Starting with number 1, the strings are E, B, G, D, A, E. The first string E is two octaves higher than the number 6 E. The E that is second fret on the D string is the middle octave.

Guitar strings derive their names from the pitch in standard tuning. Also because the lowest and highest string share the same pitch they are delineate by low and high. Starting from the top of the guitar (lowest sounding string) their names are: Low E, A, D, G, B, High E.
