Memos are single-spaced with a double space between paragraphs. Academic papers are usually double spaced throughout and no extra spacing between paragraphs. Paragraphs are shorter in memos than in academic papers. Memos list recipients at the top while academic papers don't. Academic papers have bibliographies and memos don't.
