You should be a compassionate person to begin with. You should then choose a college or hospital with the best nursing programs. Obtain your undergraduate degree in nursing from a good university. You then link with a good teaching hospital and try different areas of the hospital to see what best fits your interests.

First of all, you need to be willing to work long shifts. Most nurses work a standard 12 hour shift with only a thirty minute meal break. You also can't have a weak stomach, as you will see some bad smells and sights in nursing. Have a good memory, as well.

The top ten skills I think someones needs to be a nurse include good speaking, service orientation, social perceptiveness, reading comprehension, oral comprehension, judgment and decision making, knowledge of medicine and dentistry, biology, customer and personal service, chemistry, problem sensitivity, and critical thinking. I feel if a nuse has an understanding of all these they will succeed in thier career.

You need to have some knowledge of the human body before entering college classes (such as anatomy class). Others skills include the ability to work and communicate with other people in a friendly manner. You must also be able to work long shifts at late hours and handle blood without fainting.
