Water & drain pipe are typically copper, plastic including PVC, ABS & PEX, cast iron, and galvanized steel. Gas pipe is typically steel, CSST (corrugated stainless steel), copper & plastic (polyethylene). Local codes will dictate which is approved for a particular purpose.

Cast iron or PVC are used for the building drainage systems. Copper is used for the supply water piping to a building. PVC and CPVC for hot water can also be used for smaller building.
