There have been "three waves" of feminism. The first one was the one in the 60's when women fought for equal rights. The second was in the 1980's and was less about equality and more about safety and specific programs. The third wave is the "choices" phase. That feminism is about having the right to stay at home or work.

Ideological speaking, feminism followed political trends as socialism or liberalism, conservative, libertarian; individualist feminism which is inspired by the author Ayn Rand. There are types of feminism based on race, like: black feminism, chicana, African and womanism which is specific to middle-class white women. Postmodern feminism follow the postmodern way of thinking: labels are ways of limitation.
