Custody agreements range from sole custody (one parent has all custodial rights), joint custody (both parents share custodial rights on an agreed upon schedule) and joint supervised custody (one or more parents require 3rd party supervision for visitation).

Depending on the Qualified Domestic Relations Order issued, one parent may have sole custody, both may have joint custody which specifies visitation/stay schedule or you may elect joint physical custody, the most fluid order that allows parents a flexible schedule that allows children and parents to alternate custody on an ongoing basis.

There are two types of custody: legal and physical custody. Legal is the right to make decisions regarding the child, including medical. Physical custody is just that, who the child stays with. Both can be joint, meaning half and half or any combination; or sole, meaning one parent only. Legal custody is often sole custody to avoid disputes between parents.

Shared custody is typically a 50-50 time split with children. Joint custody has one primary custodial parent with the other parent getting every other weekend.

Laws can vary from state to state. In California, there is legal custody and physical custody. Legal custody gives one or both parents the right to make major decisions for the children. Physical custody is having the children in your home. These rights can be assigned to one parent or both parents jointly.

There are two main kinds of custody: legal (refers to making decisions on the childs behalf) and physical (refers to where the child spends time). These phrases combine with the words sole (only one parent) and joint (both parents) based on the ruling in your particular situation.
