The "generations" refer to the models released at a specific time. Older generations, such as the IBM PC, are the first generation, and there are many more.

Much like different generatoins of humans, computers have different cycles. It is usually broken up by operating systems, such as Windows 98, Windows XP, and finally Windows 7.
