According to Webster's Dictionary, a fjord is "a narrow inlet of the sea between cliffs or steep slopes." I would add that it is formed through glacial activitiy.

A fjord is a long, narrow, and deep inlet created by glacier movement. The sides of a fjord are typically very steep.
