Nematodes are actually a large, extremely diverse phylum of roundworms. Most nematodes are small, worm-like creatures, about 2 millimeters long. Many nematodes are parasitic, and can infect a large range of animals, from humans, to pigs, to dogs. Heartworms, a common parasite in dogs and cats, are forms of nematodes.

Nematodes of the phylum Nematoda are non-segmented, bilaterally symmetrical parasitic worms that do not have a respiratory or circulatory system. Nematodes undergo an egg stage, larval stage, and adult stage, and may be microscopic or up to 8 feet long. Nematodes reproduce sexually and may be free-living or parasitic.
