There are not specific causes and risk factors for reflux. There are several contributing factors that relax the lower esophageal sphincter, making reflux worse. Some of them are: use of alcohol or cigarettes, fatty and fried foods, chocolate, drinks with caffeine, eating large meals, rapid gain weight etc.

Some causes and risk factors include being overweight, eating and drinking certain types of foods and drinks such as foods with high acid content, and having excess abdominal fat. If not treated reflux can lead to esophageal strictures (scarring of the lining of the esophagus)and esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus).

Reflux is mainly cause by a defect in "valve" between oesophagus and stomach. This results in "reflux" if your stomach is too full. Known risk factors are Obesity, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (over-produced gastric acid), or hypercalcemia.
