If you are looking for an inexpensive option then the singer simple is a great starter machine. The higher in price you go with singer the higher the quality.

There're excellent models available at fabric/quilting retailers (~175-200); be open-minded about brands. Avoid models from big-box stores; they're so cheaply-made that they won't hold tension and endlessly break/tangle thread.
