What are the basic boating terms?

I am going boating with a real pro this weekend.

Forward means front and Aft means rear. If you are facing forward, Starboard means right and Port means left. Reference to a hatch most likely refers to a doorway or other type of entrance to the cabin. The bathroom is know as the head. The bilge is where the stuff from the bathroom goes when you're done with it.

Boat parts: bow, stern, mast, boom, sheet, halyard, mainsail, jib, genoa, spinnaker, shroud, stay, etc. Directions: ahead, astern, port, starboard, abeam, windward, leeward. Maneuvers: jibing, tacking, heading up, bearing away. Points of sail: close-hauled, close reach, beam reach, broad reach, running. Avoid trying to talk like a pirate, especially words like aargh!

four basic boating terms PORT is the left hand side of the vessel, STARBOARD is the right hand side, The BOW is the front, The STERN is behind you.

Well some terms to help you are 'head' which is reference to the bathroom. The front of the boat is always called forward. Aft refers to the back of boat.
