The obvious advantages of removalbe palatal expanders are the ability to change as the patients needs change. Permanent palatal expanders are better for long term use that does not require many changes. Better for long term.

Every case is different and there are reasons why one is better than the other. A removable palatal expander can be taken in and out of the mouth. A permanent one is actually put in by a dentist and has to be removed by a dentist. It can be screwed into the bone or cemented with rings around back molars.

Permanent palatal expanders are very difficult to clean around and can possibly cause difficulty in other dental treatment that might need to be done. The removable ones give you the opportunity to clean your entire mouth thoroughly, as well as let your palate rest, especially if any sores occur. Your dentist will also prefer the removable type.

If you get removable expanders then it is easier to clean your mouth when you get through eating and you will not get food in it. Permanent ones are very hard to clean.
