What are the advantages of a SLR camera?

For me the biggest advantage of owning a SLR camera is the speed. Having children, I am able to capture some great moments that require a fast responding camera.

With an SLR, the lens that takes the picture is also the viewing lens. You see exactly what you are photographing. Lenses are interchangeable and a wide variety are available. The basic camera body can be relatively inexpensive. You add whatever type, quality (and price) of the lenses you want.

The advantages to getting an SLR camera are the accessories available, such as lenses, flashes and special effect add-ons. Also SLR's offer more manual adjustments and control in terms of shutter speed and lighting (f-stop).
