Alot will depend on your utility rates. A high efficiency gas furnace can operate at a reasonable cost. Electric furnaces have less moving parts and can be more reliable. Electric units will tend to heat up a little faster than gas. In the event of a power outage, a gas furnace can be run on a generator, electric probably not.

I say electric is way safer. In my opinion gas is better for the enviorment but electric is cheaper as well. I would choose electric myself to be honest with you.
