Question by  manny (185)

What are some yiddish curses?

I heard there are some really colorful yiddish insults. Anyone know of any good ones?

As a parent, I think this is a great one: May you have twelve healthy children. And then may someone give one of them a whistle.

My favorite goes something like: May all your teeth fall out but one so you may have a toothache.

I've heard a variation of this one, something like: May all your teeth fall out but one and you then be served a nice steak. (i. e. , that you can't enjoy a great meal with one tooth. )  add a comment

May a child be named for you soon. (This sounds almost complimentary, but is a curse because there is a strong tradition among Ashkenazi Jews of never naming a child after someone living, since this would be a kinehora and would tempt the evil eye.)

Yiddish curses are unlike their English counterparts. The yiddish curses are not single words but a combination of two or more which become a phrase such as fardreyen zolstu mit di fis or "may your feet be twisted. " An example of what we would perceive as "nasty" is yemakh shmoy meaning "may his name be blotted out. " (no memory of)

One of my Dad's favorites is "Yayder essl kent das. " This means, "Any donkey knows that," and it's what you would say to someone who has just told you something incredibly obvious.
