I attended one wedding that served cheesecake in martini glasses instead of a traditional wedding cake. At another wedding the cake maker had baked the cake around a cage with doves. This is a vintage tradition that has been phased out over time. When the couple cuts into the cake, the cage is opened and the doves fly out.

Cupcakes in the shape of a cake are very cute, easy for serving and can be decorated any way you like. There are some cakes made with fondant icing that can get very creative and can be made in almost any shape you want.
