You can add a variety of lamps around the room to add light withought having to use overhead lights. There are also lights that can be plugged in to wall light sockets, kind of like nighlights but they are much brighter. You can also apply lights under shelving and under desks.

I have found free standing pole arm lights to be nice. They light a great distance and look very stylish. They can be found in any antique shop.
