Architectural beds are a good start. You can strategically place beds with rock or brick edging in visually appealing locations around your yard and make each one a little different then the other. Use different plants and different types of mulch material. If you want more maintenance free landscaping you can use decorative rocks. Also landscape lighting is another consideration.
