Cool dorm accessories, such as a poster or lava lamp, are always a safe bet. In my experience, however, graduates like nothing better than some much-needed, much-appreciated money.

Try something special that represents the year, the town, the school or the person. Examples: for the year, memorabilia representing best movies, songs, etc. For the town, check local stores for a blanket/throw, framed photos, etc. For the school try getting a basketball or football signed by lots of friends/teachers. For the person -- go with monograms.

You could go with what every High school graduate wants. A new car! Or maybe even offer to pay for their car insurance for a year.
