From Jacksonville, NC, to Jacksonville, FL, originally was home to various African peoples brought there in the early 1500's. Different tribes put together became the Gullah culture and dominated the slave labor workforce by the middle 1700's. They were acknowledged for their labor in rice and Sea Island cotton industries.

Gullah culture is unique to areas of South Carolina and Georgia. It combines elements of Creole, Caribbean and African American culture, showing strong similarities with Western and Central Africa. They have a strong tie to their cultural history and family.
