Dr. j. Cummins is one of the leaders in this research area. His article from 1984 ("Bilingualism and special education" Multilingual Matters) is fundamental for understanding the modern reasearch in this topic, but also his later articles are mandatory reading if you study bilingualism. You will also find support from Grosjean (begin with "Life with two languages" (1982) University press).
