The best tip is to practice. Have a party with friends and make each their favorite drink. This should help a lot. You should also study the recipes you are going to be using. You do not want to have to reference a book when trying to play the part.

A "bar bible" or mixed drink guide will list all the ingredients and how to prepare most mixed drinks. If you are serving at home, think simple mixed drinks.

Invest in a "jigger" - a small measuring glass with markings on the side (for the alcohol) and perhaps a larger, one-cup measure (for the mixers - cola, juice). Aim for the correct proportion of alcohol to mixer so the drink tastes good and doesn't get people drunk too fast.

Go online and search mixed drink recipes through google they seem to be the best with the most information and it will show you what the drink looks like and it will give you the recipe to make the drink as well.

Have the correct tools at hand and pretend you know what you're doing; get familiar with recipes and the movements of a bar tender. Also, memorize some of the most famous drinks and remember to measure out the alcohol you put into the shaker so that the drinks are right.

The things to remember for being a good bartender are to buy good quality alcohol. Make sure you have the basics, get good mixers and serve them in interesting glasses.

Look up and follow recipes. Measure everything, don't guess. A shot glass makes a good 1.5 oz measuring cup. Get some good tools, a tumbler, a jigger, a bar spoon, and proper glassware. It'll help.
