What are some sewing tips for gathering?

I can't seem to get it right.

To gather evenly sew two lines of stitches about 1/4 in. apart, with the stitches being about nine stitches per inch. You can set your sewing machine for that. Then pull the threads from both ends of the row until you have your gathers evenly spaced. Fasten or tie.

Set your machine's stitch length long and sew a line where you want the gathers. Pull one of the threads and distribute the gatherings along the thread. Then sew them.
