Mites are a common problem and will stipple lower leaves with yellow dots or red spots. Weevil grubs will often attack the roots of the shrub and endanger the plant.

Forsythia is a wonderful spring bush in northern Zones. While it will grow well in Zone 4 it will notin Zone 7. Also forsythia can grow quite large and if left to its own devices will consume alarge portion of the planted area, upwards of 10 ft radii.

They take up a lot of space. You will have to prune after flowering if you want to contain the plant within a certain area. Flowering occurring at the base indicates a planting problem. This bush should be planted in a protected area if the winters are very cold.
