These are myriad, but the primary philosophical basis is undoubtedly freedom of expression. This concept was vibrant and vitally new in the world as our Constitution was being formulated.

One of the most important reasons for the Constitution being created was to provide a newly independent nation an identity. Before the Constitution was written the government relied on the Articles of Confederation, which proved to be rather useless in defining a free nation with a stable and capable government.
