Archimedes invented an odometer, and a really neat invention for raising water: the screw pump. Neither one is in use today, nor are any of his impressive war machines. He was also a great mathematician. Many great inventors and scientists stood on his shoulders.

Archimede's invented the Archimede's screw, which is a device that scoops a volume of water into irrigation ditches. Archimedes used this to help ships, now it is still used today in irrigation and sewage treatment plants.

A few are; the catapult, which was used in wars, he gave the closest value of "pi", a "claw" a bit like a crane, used to lift ships partly out of water, he didn't design the lever, but he realised you could lift nearly anything with it.

"Archimedes' Screw" was a device still in use in some places. "The Archimedes' Principle" is how to get the volume of an irregular shape. He did a lot with leavers.

The screw is kind of like a Bilge pump in purpose - used to keep ships afloat. The Leaver principles he developed are still in use - remember "Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth"? Archimedes.  add a comment
