There are all kinds of modern farming inventions, from machinery to genetically engineered crops to new kinds of pesticides and herbicides. The most controversial now are genetically engineered plants.

Lots of crops now have added nutrients added into the seed (golden rice for example). Others allow for crops to be less manually demanding, such as round up ready (glyphosate) which means that they are resistant to round up and can spray and will kill all plants in the field other than your resistant hybrid.
