Almost anything can become a pretty decoration. A glass bowl filled with deep-red apples is a pretty centerpiece. Fresh flowers can be wound into napkin rings. Candles never fail.

It depends on the event. If it is casual, vibrant colors are suitable. For formal events, deep colors, perhaps a navy table linen with light/dark gray napkins along with presentable silverware. In addition, it's always nice to have a centerpiece. Flowers tend to accentuate a table setting.
