Traditionally a few passages from the religious text of the deceased's preference are read at their funeral. If they are not religious or you do not feel comfortable hiring someone for this you can arrange for next of kin to read poems or say a few words about the deceased.

From the Jewish Scriptures, consider, "Love is stronger than death ..." (Song of Solomon) From Christian Scriptures, you can't beat the last portion of romans 8. From Eastern Religion, choose a translation you like of the beginning of the Tao te Ching or the Western Inscription from Confucianism. For a non-religous, gracious passage, try Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet, "On Death."

There are some good scripture readings for funerals all over the bible. Try the book of Wisdom, such as Wisdom 3:1-9, and there are a lot of other scripture readings for funerals here as well. There are also some good ones in the New Testament, such as in the book of Romans.
